Basic Course
2012 course details here!
Basic Course in the British Virgin Islands March 2012.
The Basic course covers an introduction of both theory and practice of sailing a keelboat. It is intended for people with no or little sailing experience. The course leads to the Canadian Yachting Association Basic Cruising Standard (Day Skipper Sail) , an internationally recognized qualification. The course also covers the Boaters Card (Pleasure Craft Operators Card) which you need to operate a power boat.
We will teach you the terminology and to be able to safely sail, motor, dock and anchor a 6-10 m long keelboat in moderate conditions by day in familiar waters. The standard is in two parts, an afloat section where practical skills are developed and a theory portion that is tested in a one and a quarter hour written closed book exam at the end of the course. The afloat skills portion involves significant time on the water acting as both skipper and crew and the balance of the course will involve teaching the necessary information to cover the ashore portion and test.
All the information in the written exam is covered in the book
Basic Cruising Skills which is included the course fees
and will be sent out to you before the course. A number of other
pamphlets and cards will be included which give supporting
information for the course. General information on the learn to
Cruise standards can be found on the CYA site. On successful
completion of the course the student will be provided with a CYA
international Cruising log book and registered with the Ontario
Sailing Association to receive a student number and seal for the
logbook.(included in the fees)
The
Pleasure Craft Operators Card is also included in the
fees.
Course Format and 2012 Dates
Live Aboard
The live aboard runs for a total of six days (and five
evenings) starting on Sunday at noon and finishing on Friday
afternoon At least 4 nights are spent out at anchorage or another
marina. The group sleeps on board the boat. This format provides
more time for instruction and practice as well as more exposure
to the experience of cruising than the day courses. There is at least
30 hours of sailing. It is recommended for those who want to see if they enjoy cruising (in my experience few dont!). It provides an introduction to cruising in a a safe envirnment but does not cover many of the skills necessary for chartering or boat ownership.(these are covered at Intermediate Level) At least 4 nights are spent out at anchorage or another marina, see a typical Agenda. Class sizes are 3
individual students or 2 couples with one instructor.on board our CS30.
The live aboard courses are held in Kingston Ontario and start and finish at
Collins
Bay Marina There is ample free car parking for the duration
of the courses and the Marina is well equipped with washrooms and
showers.
Price is held at 2011 level $935 until the end of February a 25% deposit secures this price!

Day Courses
In 2011, we re-introduced Basic Cruising day courses in Kingston these also lead to the Basic cruising Standard but do not involve staying overnight on the boat. The courses will be run over two weekends or 4 days during the week. They offer a lower cost alternative especially for those who want an initial experience of sailing a keelboat or as a refresher for those who have sailed in the past or have dinghy experience. Our courses are taught by experienced instructors who are certified to teach both Basic and Intermediate courses on a tiller steered boat. They will be in Kingston, free parking is avaiable.
Price is held at 2011 level $565 until the end of February a 25% deposit secures this price!
