Intermediate Course
Intermediate Course in the British Virgin Islands March 2012.
2012 Course Details
The Intermediate course leads to the CYA Intermediate Standard an internationally recognized qualification and the recommended minimum standard for bare-boat chartering. Completion of the Basic Standard and further sailing experience are prerequisites for this course.
If you are an experienced sailor and are confident you meet the Basic standard but do not have the qualification you must challenge and pass the Basic exam before taking the Intermediate Course. An extra fee is charged for the Basic Exam and study materials. If at the outset of the course you are not sailing at a Basic level then evey effort will be made to coach you to complete the Basic level during the course.
For the Intermediate course you should also have some knowledge of coastal navigation. Best is to take the Coastal Navigation Course (We will hold a course in Kingston in Spring 2012) but I have written some notes to give you the basics of navigation required for the course. On successful completion you will be able to cruise safely as both skipper and crew of a sailing yacht of 8 - 12 meters in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. The Standard emphasizes on-the-water skills at a level acceptable for bareboat chartering. The Intermediate Course is designed for more experienced sailors who plan to cruise or bareboat charter.
Cruise planning, predeparture checks, living afloat, weather, boat systems, emergency procedures, Advanced Docking Techniques and docking in an unfamiliar harbour, seamanship and Practical application of Coastal Navigation Techniques are taught and practiced. Improved sailing skills are developed including efficient sailing, including sail trim, helming technique gybing and tacking. We also practice additional methods of return to a crew overboard, including short handed techniques and discuss full emergency procedures. If time and conditions permit we will also experience flying a cruising spinnaker. See a vido of the quick stop return to a crew overboard we made that is taught in this course The course is taught in a 6 day live aboard format. This longer format, coupled with a small class size provides sufficient time for coaching and practice to meet the skills required and for covering all information necessary for the ashore skills exam in depth.
This standard is in two parts, an afloat section where practical skills are taught and improved and a theory portion that is tested in a 2 hour written closed book exam at the end of the course, all the necessay information for the exam is provided in pre-course materials and reviewed during the course. The practical course involves continuous acessment and feed back.
The course fee includes reprints of a number of articles,
various pamphlets and the American Sailing Association guide book
to coastal cruising and bareboat chartering, "Cruising
Fundamentals".
On successful completion you will be provided with a seal for
your CYA logbook
